Reading Aloud BookTrust's School Library Pack!
Every year the charity BookTrust sends free books to all secondary schools in the UK. You can find all about this amazing initiative here.
Our book club, known as The Booklings, decided to try something different with the books in the pack. We've been reading them for a few weeks now and discussing them, the students are really enjoying them.
When an opportunity came to Skype with a class across the pond in New York to take part in Global Read Aloud Day, we decided to read aloud our favourite passages from these great books.
Students took turns reading passages from Ghost Boys, Boy 87, The House With Chicken Legs, Star to Star and A Good Day For Climbing Trees.
Students approached the camera, introduced themselves and spent a minute discussing what book they were going to read from and why they liked it so much.
It was a really amazing experience to see the students read aloud from these books and have the other students in the U.S. ask questions about them.
In the end, the students from New York asked for a complete list of all of the books that The Booklings read from because they "sounded so cool."
I loved this program and would do it again in a minute, it's a testament to the power of reading and reading aloud in general. It shows how the stories we read can connect us even if we think we have nothing in common.
