Book Club: Banned Books Week Preparations!
Today in book club The Booklings prepared for Banned Books Week.
To start, I asked the group to finish this line: "A World Without Books is Like.."
It was great to see them come up with insightful and funny responses like "Pasta Without Sauce", "Macaroni Without Cheese" or "The Moon Without It's Shine."
I used the whiteboard to keep the writing going, the students filled it with great messages about banned books and what life would be like without books.
We then a had a good discussion about banned books. Many of the students were very surprised to find out books like Harry Potter and Captain Underpants are banned in the United States and other countries.
When we were finished we took part in the "Dear Banned Author" Letter writing campaign which you can find out about here
Students used the postcards provided by the American Library Association and the Google Sheet with the appropriate addresses on it to send their favourite authors messages thanking them for writing books that get banned because as we all know, the best books are the ones that get banned.
It was a great lunch hour eating snacks and talking about banned books!
