Book Club: Year 7 Reads & Gandalf, Voldemort, Katniss!
Today in Book Club the Booklings chose books that they feel
our incoming Year 7 students will enjoy when they arrive at Glenthorne in
September.
They spent their lunch hour roaming around the Library,
choosing books that they feel a Year 7 absolutely should read.
We then wrapped the books up and they wrote hints on them as
to what the books are about. In September I’ll put these on display and let
Year 7s have the first chance to unwrap them when they arrive for their first
Library Lessons.
This activity was so popular we had other students wander
over to our group to see what was going on. After we explained the idea, we
soon had additional students recommending books and wrapping them up!
In the last 10 minutes of lunch we ended with a game of
Human Rock Paper Scissors – Literary Edition. It’s a game I call “Gandlaf,
Voldemort, Katniss”.
I split the Booklings into two teams and told them all to
come up with motions or actions to perform when they choose a character.
Gandalf became a “You shall not pass!” move.
Voldemort was touching your nose.
Katniss was drawing a bow and arrow back.
Just like in rock, paper, scissors, Gandalf beats Katniss,
Voldemort beats Gandalf and Katniss beats Voldemort.
It was a huge amount of fun to mark the last book club of
the school year!
