An Visit from Author Jennifer Bell!
This week over 100 students had a great visit from author Jennifer Bell!
Jennifer delivered a great hour-long interactive presentation on her inspirations, how she worked as a bookseller at Foyles, taking care of the pet piranha while introducing people to great books.
Her Uncommoner series is a tale about two siblings that get drawn into the fantasy world of Lundinor, a secret market that is hidden under London.
The thing about Lundinor is that everyday objects have special powers, for example toilet brushes are electrified and are used by the police to subdue criminals and combs have real teeth and are used to stop pickpockets.
To illustrate all of this, Jennifer had students (and myself) stand up and choose items from a small chest. We had to imagine that an Uncommon Wolf (as large as a horse) was bearing down on us and we had to choose one item from the chest to see if it would save us.
After we had chosen the item, Jennifer would explain what its power was and if it would stop the wolf. Only one of us chose an item that would save them, I chose the comb which was useless agains the wolf and was eaten immediately.
It was a very enjoyable hour with a great author who kept the group fascinated and entertained!
