Time to Talk Day 2017

The 2nd of February was Time to Talk Day here in the UK. It's a day aimed at getting co-workers, students, teachers and families to talk about mental health and try to break the stigma that surrounds it.

It's organised by Time to Change, it's web site can be found here.

To mark the occasion, a colleague of mine in the English Dept held a debate with students.

Students debated if mental health should be discussed more in schools.

Now, it may seem obvious that mental health should be discussed more in schools but the idea was to get students talking about the topic.

We had a full house, with over thirty students asking to join the floor and watch the debate between the two sides.

It was a huge success, with Year 7 to 10 students debating the topic in a mature and respectful manner. They fielded questions from the floor and provided well-rounded ideas on the topic.

In the end, the vast majority of the floor agreed that yes, mental health should be discussed further in schools!
