SLAM Club, Season 1, Episode 2: Robot Building!

In our second episode of our SLAM (Student Leaders & Makers) Club we used the Littlebits program to build an Art-Bot!

Littlebits are essentially magnetic circuits that allow you to make almost anything. We have a basic kit but there are hundreds of things we can do with it.
To make the Art-Bot, we connected power to the DC Motor. Students then used a combination of LEGO, K'Nex and blue -tac to create an axle and a wheel that would spin the motor around in a circle.

Using a rubber band, we connected a marker to the Art-Bot and turned it on to see what would happen.

Thankfully, it worked really well! The Art-Bot spun around creating circles and patterns to the delight of the students.

We then spent some time connecting different coloured pens to it. When we were finished we tinkered around with other aspects of the package including the buzzer, alarm and motor.

Littlebits is a really great product with tons of potential. I plan on expanding this kit in the future so more students can participate. This was also a great opportunity to showcase our growing technology section and our new robotics books which of course flew off of the shelves before lunch hour was up. A great success overall!
