Student Book Review: Buffalo Soldier

Buffalo soldier is a book set in America. It follows the story of a girl called Charlotte, who has spent all her life as a slave to the white English people. After an unfortunate accident, Charlotte is forced to join the army to forget the terrible sights she has already encountered. However, to do that she must become Charley O'Hara and attempt to navigate life in the armed forces.

In my opinion this book has an engaging and thrilling plot. Although the language is taxing at first as the story progresses it gets easier. You begin to fall in love with Charlotte and Abe, her trusty steed as you see the story unfold. This tale runs the reader through a variety of emotions as the way it is written makes you feel like you are sitting in Charlotte's head. When she feels loss, so do you, when she feels joy you do as well. This little addition makes you feel connected to the story so at the end it makes you feel satisfied that everything turns out okay for Charlotte.

On the other hand, it is a slow book to read. Also, the fact that you may need to re-read some parts to understand the American slang. Another point is that the language is rather strong in places and sometimes inappropriate. In view of these points I would recommend it to those of an older, mature nature.

Overall I think that the story is captivating and action-packed, the characters are loveable and the tale is heart-warming. It gives and uplifting sense of hope, that you can achieve anything you want. If you try you have no idea what you can do. Like Charlotte, you may be turned down but if you pick yourself up and refuse to quit you can do anything you want to do, be anything you want to be and achieve anything you want to achieve. This book carries a truly inspirational message, you are not alone in anything you dream, there is always someone out there to help you along the way.
