Banned Books Presentations
As I previously posted, over the next few weeks we've been looking at introducing the students to Banned Books and getting them to think about censorship in general.
They have been tasked with defending a book in the Library that I have decided will be removed permanently unless they convince me otherwise using a persuasive argument. The students were also asked to create a book trailer using Animoto as a way to introduce their book to the class.
Here is a sample from a Year 7 class:

Twilight
"We believe that Twilight should not be banned because it allows children to use their imagination. The book does have some violent chapters but that doesn't mean it should be removed. Also, many of the characters are children's inspirations meaning if the book was banned the library may get complaints.
Twilight is an adventurous book which allows children to see how mythical characters act and although it does have violence this is not a reason to remove this book forever. The supernatural helps children and teenagers open up their creative minds, it also helps with children's imaginations in their lessons."
The Hunger Games
"The Hunger Games should not be banned because it is a highly popular book and it can teach you many things for your future. It is a book that can inspire people who want to be an author when they're older. Even though it has some violence and disobedience in it, there are many other books that have more violence in them that haven't been banned. Also, there are loads of video games that have violence in them but none of them get banned. Why would you want to ban a book that everyone loves? I think that you are making a massive mistake banning this book because it is brilliant.
The Fault in Our Stars
"We think that you shouldn't ban this beautiful book. It's about two love struck teens fighting against cancer. Parents shouldn't complain about this book because it wasn't necessarily written for kids and there is even a 12+ label on it. It should normally be a parent's responsibility. One in three people across the world are affected by cancer it should be normal for kids to understand and learn about these kinds of situations."
