Carnegie Book Club, Session Three

Today we made black-out poetry using excerpts from different Carnegie-nominated books.

 

Black-out poetry is a fun and easy way to get students to create their own poems.

 

Take a page from a book, magazine, newspaper, whatever, photocopy it, and tell students to block off the words that they want to keep. Everything else is "blacked out" using whatever colour they want, leaving only the poem behind.

 

Luckily, there are some really creative examples you can find online to put on a screen for inspiration. Half of the group were eager to share their poems with the rest while the other half weren't so keen but I was pleasantly surprised that any wanted to stand up and read, it was great!
