Student Poetry

In October, some of our students attended a poetry-writing workshop with performance poet Neal Zetter.

By the end of the session they were asked to write a poem about someone that inspired them. Here is one written about Rosa Park by a Year 9 student:

 

She refused to give up her seat

To the man in the crisp grey suit

Her pain-tightened lips stayed firmly shut

But her eyes were a glimmer of hope

 

Like wildfire, the news spread

Don’t get on the bus, don’t get on the bus!

Let’s watch them squirm without the money

That comes from our half-empty pockets

 

Dreaming, hoping, never believing

That she would be the leading light

Who knew a small, quietly spoken girl

Would emerge as an inspiration

At the end of the fight
